Mi'Kmaq Quillwork-Inspired Craft | Art Attack

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a Mi’kmaq quillwork inspired craft!

Quillwork is a traditional Native American art in which porcupine quills are used to embellish clothing, accessories and containers. Because of their skilled and impressive quill work, the Mi’kmaq (Micmac) were first referred to as “the porcupine people” by the French. Today, very few craftsmen practice the traditional craft, but it is still well known.

You'll need:

  • A small box with a lid (I'm using a recycled toy box.)

  • Toothpicks - I would suggest about 10 per color you want to use, then go from there.

  • Scissors or pliers* possibly get some help*

  • Acrylic or craft paint and brush

  • Clear drying tacky glue.
